Subject: Embracing Insufficiency - Lessons from Jordan Peterson
Hey Friends,
Welcome Back 👋
Today, I re-listened to an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience featuring Jordan Peterson, where he posed a profound question to Joe that really put me into a deep reflection: "How am I insufficient and how can I rectify that?" The way Jordan presents it is that we are ALL insufficient in one way or another but we can ALL choose to rectify those insufficiencies.
Peterson suggests that we can make significant strides in our personal growth if we aim low enough. This doesn't mean setting low standards for ourselves, but rather breaking down our larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. This approach allows us to make consistent progress, no matter how small, towards becoming the best version of ourselves.
I've always been aware of my insufficiencies, and I've always strived to rectify them. I'm not perfect, and I don't always finish everything I start. I could be a better person in many ways. I have my fair share of flaws and insecurities. But the constant in my life is my commitment to self-improvement.
I started this blog as a reflection of my journey towards self-improvement and my desire to rectify my insufficiencies. I wanted to create a space for people who resonate with my experiences, a place where they can feel heard and understood. I'm well aware of my shortcomings, but I believe that's what makes life beautiful - we all have room for growth.
My life has been shaped by reading, journaling, podcasts, and personal fitness goals. These activities have been my compass, providing guidance and stability. Peterson's insights have added a new dimension to my understanding of self-improvement. His approach of breaking down larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks has been a game-changer for me. It's not about aiming low, but about making consistent progress, no matter how small, towards becoming the best version of ourselves.
With that said, here is our journal prompt for today:
Journal Prompt:
Reflect on your own insufficiencies. What does being insufficient mean to you? Write a short narrative about a time when you felt you were truly insufficient. How did it make you feel? How did it impact those around you? And how can you rectify these insufficiencies in your daily life?
This prompt is meant to encourage you to look deep into your understanding of insufficiency. It's an opportunity to reflect on your life, your insecurities, and the choices you make in pursuit of self-improvement. Remember, there's no right or wrong answer here. It's all about your personal journey and understanding. And please also remember that two things can be true at the same time, while we all have room to grow we also have a lot of uniqueness and amazing qualities. It's okay to want to improve but please never stop loving yourself along the way.
As you ponder on this, you may find it helpful to revisit a previous post on how to start journaling. It provides useful tips and techniques to guide you in this reflective journey.
