Daily Journal Prompt 239- The world Breaks Everyone.
"The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” - Ernest Hemingway
Happy Sunday Everyone. Thank you for sharing part of your day with me. I've been doing a lot of self reflection this past week and a major point of emphasis has been shifting my focus from WHY to HOW. Let me explain.
I often get caught up in the "why" mentality. Why does this keep happening? Why did I not get that answer right? Why does my god damn back hurt every morning? lol. I don't want to undermine the importance of asking why, there is so much value in understanding the why behind things. I also believe it is the breeding ground for a victim mentality. I think people often get to end of the 5 W's (who, what, where, when, and why) but forget the most crucial factor that truly brings those all together. "HOW"
The world breaks everyone. Not equally, not justly, but it is a guarantee in life. We have all had our fair share of picking up the pieces of a broken situation. This is where the mindset transition from why to how is imperative. We often have no control over the things that happen to us. Didn't get that job promotion? Broken heart? Failed that class? Maybe it is just me but my default tends to be "why?" and that question quickly becomes unproductive. It creates a sense of helplessness. On the other hand, "How?!"
How do I make sufficient progress to ensure that next job promotion is mine?!
How do I make sure I am prepared for that test so I don't fail next time?
How do I heal my body so my back will stop hurting?!!! ☠️
"The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” - Ernest Hemingway
The difference in my mind is you either stop at why or you work through the how.
Now my question to you is this:
How are you going to make sure you are strong at the broken places?
I don't know what you might be going through, I certainly don't have all of the answers to make it better for you. What I do know for certain is you have an opportunity every morning that you wake up to ask the question, "How?" And if you can do that, I know you can make it through anything. You wouldn't be reading this in the first place if you weren't already asking yourself how.
That's all I have for you today. I love you all. Thank you for being here and for supporting me the way you do. It means the world to me. Please share this with someone who you think could benefit from our community.
To The Week Ahead 🍻
