Subject: Screens & Dopamine

Hey Friends,

Welcome back πŸ‘‹

Today's journal prompt is inspired by a recent podcast episode on Modern Wisdom, hosted by the ever-insightful Chris Williamson. The guest was the highly respected Dr. Alok Kanojia, a psychiatrist, Harvard Medical School instructor, co-founder of HealthyGamerGG, Twitch streamer, and YouTuber. Dr. Kanojia is a unique figure who has managed to bridge the world of traditional psychiatry and the digital realm, especially the gaming community. I highly reccomend you check him out πŸ‘‡

If you're not familiar with Dr. Kanojia's work, he focuses on the intersection of mental health and our modern digital lives. He helps individuals, particularly gamers, understand their motivations, the workings of their brains, and the challenges they face. A lot of this work involves explaining concepts like mindfulness and how it can be beneficial in navigating the digital landscape.

The podcast episode delved into the correlation between video game usage and mental health, why our brains are addicted to screens, whether dopamine fasting is a legitimate practice, the problem with exposure to adult content at a young age, how to combat screen addiction, why some people constantly feel like they have brain fog, and how to find meaning in your life. This was an amazinh conversation and highly recxomend you check it out πŸ‘‡

For our journal prompt today, I'd like you to reflect on the following question:

How does your interaction with digital screens (social media, video games, etc.) impact your mental health and overall well-being?

This prompt asks you to deeply introspect about your relationship with the digital world. Are you in control, or do you feel that your devices are controlling you? How do these interactions impact your sense of self, your mood, and your overall mental health? If you're a gamer, do you feel that gaming affects your real-world relationships and self-perception?

The goal here isn't to judge ourselves or to feel guilty, but rather to gain a better understanding of our habits and their impact on our lives. Remember, self-awareness is the first step towards change when there is a true problem.

Technology and our screens don't need to be viewed as an enemy. The goal of this thought exercise is to understand your relationship to technology, how you can better use it as a tool for success and less as an escape from reality.

Until our next rendezvous.
