Subject: Neuro Technology Is The Future
Hey Friends,
Welcome back π
Today I listened to an intriguing TED Talk that was presented by neuro-technology ethicist, Nita Farahany, and it was nothing short of fascinating and thought-provoking.
In her talk, Farahany discussed how we are on the cusp of a new era of neurotechnology that has the potential to record our most private data: the electromagnetic pulses that map our thoughts and desires. She presented how this data, once recorded, could unlock the potential to self-program ourselves via brain stimuli, offering promising applications such as treating everything from depression to epilepsyβ1β.
Yet, while the possibilities are exciting, Farahany also cautioned us about the potential risks. Questions about who is collecting our brain data and how they might use it. Without a recognized and protected "human right for cognitive liberty," we could benefit from healing but also fall prey to microtargeting, surveillance, and manipulationβ.
I found this conversation so fascinating. The idea of having the ability to track our brain activity, of having the potential to self-program ourselves and the potential to help the 300 milliom people who suffer from depression finally feel a sense of relief.β it feels like a sci-fi movie, doesn't it? But this isn't fiction; it's the reality we're heading towards. It makes me wonder about the possibilities, the hope and the worries that come with such advancements in technology. Without getting to political, I think we can all recognize the potential for evil behind this technology.
But when I listen to the pain in Nita's voice as she explains the heartache and suffering she experienced after losing her daughter. And how she used exposure therapy and nuero feedback to help her cope with the ptsd that came from losing her child, I feel a sense of hope from the future of this technology.
So, for today's journal prompt, inspired by Nita Farahany's talk, I want you to ponder and write about this question:
In the light of emerging neurotechnology, what specific problems or challenges do you hope can be addressed or solved with the potential to self-program our brains? And on the flip side, what worries or concerns do you have about how this technology could be used?
Remember, there's no right or wrong answer here. This is a space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings about this emerging technology and its implications.
Until our next rendezvous.
With all my heart
Your Friend, Austin β€β
