Subject: Why You Should Want to Suffer - Lessons from Paul Bloom
Hey friends,
Welcome back π
Today, we're diving into a topic that's often shied away from in our pursuit of happiness - suffering. Inspired by an enlightening discussion i recently listened to with renowned psychologist Paul Bloom. We're exploring why suffering isn't just inevitable, but also valuable. Bloom, known for his insightful perspectives on topics like happiness, satisfaction, and pleasure, presented a compelling argument about the importance of struggle and the shortcomings of hedonismβ.
In his podcast with Chris Williamson, Bloom proposed the question: Would you plug into the Matrix, a simulated reality where you'd experience nothing but pleasure and happiness, abandoning your real-life struggles, responsibilities, and loved ones? It's a modern twist on philosopher Robert Nozick's famous 'Experience Machine' thought experiment and it's led many to reconsider their pursuit of constant happiness.
Bloom's perspective is that true satisfaction comes not from avoiding suffering but from overcoming it. It's in our struggles that we find purpose, build resilience, and truly connect with others. Even in the most challenging moments, there's an opportunity for growth and personal development. So, instead of running from pain, we should learn to embrace it, understanding that it's an integral part of our human journey.
This leads us to today's journal prompt. In the spirit of Bloom's philosophy,
think about a time when you've experienced suffering or hardship. How did it influence your understanding of happiness and satisfaction? Would you choose a life of constant pleasure over your real life with its struggles and triumphs?
Reflect on these questions, and remember, While it's natural to seek happiness and avoid pain, Bloom urges us to appreciate the value of genuine experiences, even when they're challenging or uncomfortable. In doing so, we might find a deeper sense of fulfillment and a richer understanding of what it means to live a meaningful life.
As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts and reflections, so feel free to share them in the comments below. And don't forget to sign up for the daily Journal prompt newsletter if you have not already!
