Subject: Discovering Emotions through the Dance of Light and Shadow - Lessons from Lonneke Gordijn
Hey Friends,
Welcome back 👋🏻
Today, I feel inspired. I listened to a discussion about the way art, technology, and nature converge and the enchanting world of Lonneke Gordijn. As the co-founder of Studio Drift, Gordijn is celebrated for her installations that link the intricate relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Her mesmerizing work, 'Franchise Freedom,' exhibited at Burning Man 2018, is a testament to her unique artistic vision.
In her TED talk, Gordijn delves into the philosophy underpinning her creations, revealing how they reflect the intricate dance of life, characterized by a delicate balance of light and shadow, freedom and structure, chaos and order. Her work 'Franchise Freedom,' for instance, is a breathtaking display of 600 luminous drones that mimic a swarm of starlings, symbolizing the tension between individual autonomy and societal conventions.
Gordijn emphasizes the importance of creating art that is not static, but rather, evokes the same emotions that nature can stir within us. She states, "Art should not just be a static image... it should make you feel something. It should make you feel the same emotions that you feel when you see a beautiful sunset or when you see a storm coming in."
This leads us to today's journal prompt. Inspired by Gordijn's philosophy.
Reflect on a piece of art that has deeply moved you. What emotions did it stir within you? How did it resonate with your personal experiences or perspectives? Can you draw parallels between the emotions evoked by this piece of art and those stirred by a natural phenomenon you've witnessed?
Art that stirs within us raw emotions, art that resonates deeply with our personal experiences, is one of the most profound aspects of life. It is my hope that this exploration of Lonneke Gordijn's philosophy and work inspires you to create your own piece of art, one that could touch hearts and move the world.
As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts and reflections, so feel free to share them in the comments below.
Until our next rendezvous.
With all my heart
Your Friend, Austin ❤✌
