Where Does Your Self Worth Come From?

Happy Sunday, everyone. I hope you're all finding moments of peace and clarity in your day. Today, I want to share a question that's been on my mind lately.

"Where does your self-worth come from?"

Ted Lasso

Over the years, I’ve pondered this question deeply, especially during moments of self-doubt and reflection. It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking validation from external sources – from our achievements, our relationships, or the opinions of others. But I’ve come to realize that true self-worth can’t be found in fleeting moments of success or in the approval of others.

When I think about self-worth, I'm reminded of a quote by the poet Rumi: "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it." To me, this speaks to the essence of self-worth – the idea that it's not something we need to earn or acquire, but rather something we already possess, waiting to be uncovered beneath the layers of self-doubt and insecurity.

In a world that often measures worth by external markers of success – wealth, status, beauty – it's easy to lose sight of our own inherent value as human beings. We're bombarded with messages that tell us we're not good enough as we are, that we need to be thinner, smarter, more accomplished in order to be worthy of love and acceptance.

But the truth is, self-worth isn't something that can be quantified or measured by external standards. It's not about how much money we make or how many followers we have on social media. It's about recognizing and honoring our own intrinsic value, independent of external validation.

For me, cultivating self-worth has been a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. It's been about learning to love and appreciate myself for who I am, not for who I think I should be or who others want me to be. It's been about embracing my strengths and talents, while also acknowledging my weaknesses and areas for growth.

Along the way, I've discovered that self-worth is closely linked to self-compassion – the ability to treat ourselves with kindness and understanding, especially in moments of struggle or failure. It's about recognizing that we're all human, imperfect beings doing the best we can with the tools we have.

So, where does your self-worth come from? It comes from within you – from your ability to recognize and honor your own value, independent of external validation. It comes from embracing your humanity, with all its complexities and contradictions.

But that doesn't mean we have to go it alone. Seeking support from others – whether it's through therapy, mentoring, or simply confiding in a trusted friend – can be invaluable on this journey. It's okay to ask for help, to lean on others when we need support. After all, we're all in this together.

As we navigate the week ahead, I encourage you to reflect on where your self-worth comes from. Take a moment to appreciate yourself for who you are, just as you are. And remember, you are worthy of love, respect, and happiness – simply because you exist.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I'm grateful for each and every one of you. Please feel free to share this with anyone who might benefit from our community.
